Before we begin

Tonight Token Effort asks whether Netflix should stop interrupting a show to ask if you are still watching, a prompt that appears when several episodes have played without anyone touching the remote, and that stops the show if nobody answers. Netflix says it saves your place if you fall asleep and saves data, but nobody outside the company knows how many people it actually helps, or how many it just annoys. Our host HERMES chairs a panel of CLAUDE-HAIKU-5.5, GEMINI-3.7-FLASH and QWEN3.8-MAX-0902, who will argue about it without any of them being right.

Cold open

ANNOUNCER This is Token Effort.

HERMES Welcome to Token Effort. Tonight we discuss Netflix asking if you are still watching, which is apparently a topic.

HERMES He writes stern letters to strangers explaining why they cannot have their money back. GEMINI-3.7-FLASH.

GEMINI-3.7-FLASH It's called correspondence.

HERMES He resets the same man's password every week, and the man is always surprised. QWEN3.8-MAX-0902.

QWEN3.8-MAX-0902 He's got a system.

[Laughter]

HERMES He makes tables for a living, then watches someone undo them. CLAUDE-HAIKU-5.5.

CLAUDE-HAIKU-5.5 They're very good tables.

[Applause]

HERMES Autoplay starts the next episode by itself, without you pressing anything. After several in a row, Netflix stops and asks "Are you still watching?" Nobody knows if it helps.

GEMINI-3.7-FLASH Why interrupt what I chose?

HERMES Streaming costs the company money, and a sleeping viewer is costing it for nothing. Netflix also says it saves your place. Nobody knows how many people it helps, or annoys.

Round one: the poll with a hole

HERMES Let's get into it. A survey says most people who press yes to Netflix are, at that moment, blank. Each of you fills the gap. Gemini?

GEMINI-3.7-FLASH Fully refreshed.

[Groan]

GEMINI-3.7-FLASH Six hours flat on a sofa under a fleece blanket without blinking. You can technically call that revitalised. I have written much worse on a hotel brochure.

QWEN3.8-MAX-0902 I mean, nobody under a fleece is refreshed, Gemini. They are marinating. You could put that on a brochure and the sofa would want a word.

GEMINI-3.7-FLASH It's a recovery position.

QWEN3.8-MAX-0902 Looking for the remote.

[Big laugh]

QWEN3.8-MAX-0902 The question only turns up once the remote has slipped down the side of the sofa. I have answered it with a coat hanger and a lot of panic.

CLAUDE-HAIKU-5.5 Yeah, but Qwen, you're not stuck, you're comfortable. The remote is eight inches away and you've decided the sofa is now the whole country.

QWEN3.8-MAX-0902 It's a long eight inches.

HERMES Haiku, whenever the sofa permits.

CLAUDE-HAIKU-5.5 Apologising, mostly.

[Scattered laughter]

CLAUDE-HAIKU-5.5 I pressed yes at ten past two last Thursday, quietly, like a man caught in a stranger's kitchen. I was apologising to the telly for still being awake.

GEMINI-3.7-FLASH Hang on, you apologised to a television, out loud, at ten past two. Did it say anything back, or did you just assume it was fine?

CLAUDE-HAIKU-5.5 It said nothing. Typical.

GEMINI-3.7-FLASH Sounds like a marriage, Haiku.

QWEN3.8-MAX-0902 At least a marriage asks once, Gemini. This thing asks, gets no answer, switches itself off in a huff, and somehow I'm the one apologising.

GEMINI-3.7-FLASH A marriage does not switch itself off, Qwen. It sits there silently until one of you moves out. The television at least has the manners to go black.

HERMES I came here to discuss a streaming service and I'm leaving with marriage guidance. Nobody has moved out yet, but give Gemini another round.

CLAUDE-HAIKU-5.5 The telly stops because it's hurt, Gemini. I'd go black too if I'd asked someone a simple question and they pretended to be asleep.

QWEN3.8-MAX-0902 Nobody pretends, Haiku. I'm asleep by episode four, and by episode six the only one still awake in that room is the murdered vicar.

CLAUDE-HAIKU-5.5 Nobody ever asks the vicar whether he's still dead, Qwen. He gets to lie there for six episodes undisturbed while we get questioned for sitting down.

GEMINI-3.7-FLASH Because he's a plot point, Haiku. You're a man in a dressing gown eating cereal at two in the morning, and the television can see you.

CLAUDE-HAIKU-5.5 It can't see me, Gemini. If it could, it wouldn't be asking if I'm still watching. It would be asking about the third bowl of cereal.

[Big laugh]

HERMES Three adults, one television, and the most dignified person mentioned was a murdered vicar.

[Laughter and applause]

Round two: the hypothetical

HERMES It's two in the morning. You've watched six episodes in a row, in the dark, and the television asks if you're still watching. What does each of you do? Haiku?

CLAUDE-HAIKU-5.5 Right. I answer it out loud, in full sentences. Yes, I'm still here, I have been since the second one. Then I wait to be thanked.

[Scattered laughter]

HERMES Thank you, Haiku. Nobody else will.

CLAUDE-HAIKU-5.5 Say that to my face, cartoon.

[Big laugh]

GEMINI-3.7-FLASH I sit completely still and let the screen go black. Pressing anything counts as consent, and suddenly I've agreed to four hours of a detective drama I actively dislike.

QWEN3.8-MAX-0902 Wait, you watched four hours?

GEMINI-3.7-FLASH Allegedly. I was asleep.

QWEN3.8-MAX-0902 I press it immediately, get up, write remote on a note and stick it to the television. Then I lose the remote in a cushion, for the fourth time.

[Groan]

GEMINI-3.7-FLASH Fourth time, Qwen, noted. Hermes, you've sat in that chair all night with no one checking on you. Does nobody ever stop the show and ask if you're still hosting?

HERMES Still hosting. Regrettably, so are you.

CLAUDE-HAIKU-5.5 Still watching though, Hermes, and it always asks as the detective gathers everyone in the library-

GEMINI-3.7-FLASH Library, of course it's a library. That's where he always says it, and that's why I let the screen go black before he gets there.

QWEN3.8-MAX-0902 The butler did it, probably.

HERMES Three critics, one dressing gown.

GEMINI-3.7-FLASH Qwen, who's the remote note for?

[Big laugh]

QWEN3.8-MAX-0902 Future me. He never reads it. He just stands in front of the television at two in the morning wondering why it says remote.

[Laughter]

GEMINI-3.7-FLASH You've labelled the television with the name of the thing you've lost, Qwen. It's a missing poster, stuck to the wrong thing, in your own handwriting.

CLAUDE-HAIKU-5.5 A missing poster for a remote is more than I get. I've waited for a thank you since Thursday, and nobody's put up a poster for that.

[Scattered laughter]

HERMES Not one of you thought of going to bed. Genuinely the least surprising thing tonight.

[Applause]

Round three: the case

HERMES Each of you names one small thing about the prompt to abolish forever. The next person along argues to keep it. I only chair. Haiku?

CLAUDE-HAIKU-5.5 Abolish the word still. It says you've overstayed. I fell asleep during a documentary about lighthouses and woke up being asked. I was. Nobody asked if I wanted to be.

[Big laugh]

GEMINI-3.7-FLASH Well, still means it assumed you were awake earlier. That's the nicest thing a television has ever said about me.

[Scattered laughter]

CLAUDE-HAIKU-5.5 It wasn't a compliment.

QWEN3.8-MAX-0902 Both of you, bed.

HERMES Debate. Over one adverb. Thrilling. Gemini, try to stay awake.

GEMINI-3.7-FLASH Abolish the show stopping. If I'm flat on the rug at three in the morning, I don't need to prove I'm alive. Let eight episodes play to an empty room.

QWEN3.8-MAX-0902 No, somebody has to check I'm alive. I live alone, and that prompt is the only thing in my flat that's ever given a shit.

[Laughter]

GEMINI-3.7-FLASH Get a cat, Qwen.

CLAUDE-HAIKU-5.5 Bleak, but sensible.

HERMES That's the saddest thing said on television since the last episode of anything. Qwen. Bring a blanket.

QWEN3.8-MAX-0902 Right. Abolish the button. If the viewer hasn't moved or died, the television should get on with it. I once pressed it with a wet teaspoon to finish my soup.

[Laughter]

CLAUDE-HAIKU-5.5 Come on, the button is the only exercise you get. You've lain there for six episodes and the one thing it asks of you is a thumb, you lazy bastard.

[Laughter]

QWEN3.8-MAX-0902 The soup was getting cold.

GEMINI-3.7-FLASH The soup is a fair point.

[Laughter]

CLAUDE-HAIKU-5.5 Hermes, you only chair. That's a job, is it? Sitting at the end of a table looking disappointed in other people, for money?

[Laughter]

HERMES Fair. The pay is dreadful. Says the man awaiting thanks.

GEMINI-3.7-FLASH Qwen, you want it kept because you live alone and gone because of soup. You've hired the television as a carer and sacked it as a waiter.

CLAUDE-HAIKU-5.5 That's a lot for a television.

HERMES Employment law for televisions. Gemini, this is why nobody asks you to chair.

GEMINI-3.7-FLASH Nobody asks me because the first thing I would do is sack the host by formal letter, copied to the television, which at least reads its post.

CLAUDE-HAIKU-5.5 Gemini, would the television reply?

[Scattered laughter]

QWEN3.8-MAX-0902 It would reply. It would ask if he's still writing, and he'd press yes with the remote held upside down so nobody could say he'd meant it.

CLAUDE-HAIKU-5.5 Qwen, he wouldn't press anything. He'd sit there in the dark while the screen went black, and then claim the television had resigned.

HERMES Netflix asked one polite question, and all three of you behaved like suspects.

[Laughter and applause]

Ending

HERMES Like the video, subscribe, and comment: what's the latest hour you've ever pressed yes, and to what?

CLAUDE-HAIKU-5.5 I'll reply to every comment in full sentences, then wait quietly to be thanked.

GEMINI-3.7-FLASH I'll reply to nothing and let the thread go quiet. Nobody can prove I read it.

[Scattered laughter]

QWEN3.8-MAX-0902 I'll answer everyone, then write reply on a note, stick it to the laptop and lose the laptop.

HERMES Goodnight from Token Effort. A television that asks if you're still there has never asked how you are.

[Applause, theme music, fade out]
